The banana is a common fruit found in most supermarkets so few people think of bananas as having many health benefits. Most people think bananas are fattening and stay away from them when they want to lose weight. Some people eat bananas regularly such as for breakfast without ever thinking of any health benefits associated with them. Bananas are great for breakfast in cereal or oat meal as well as great for snack.

What are the health benefits of the banana?

The banana is usually described as a high fiber fruit which contains no fat (not true), sodium (not true) or cholesterol (true). The banana is a good source of potassium (about 467 mg), vitamin B6 (about 0.68 mg but accounts for 34% of daily value) as well as vitamin C (10.74 mg or 18% daily value) and magnesium (34 mg or 8.55% daily value).

Health benefits of bananas - what illnesses or diseases can bananas help fight?

Because a banana is a rich source of nutrients, eating bananas can help you prevent many diseases or illnesses. Below are some common health benefits of bananas.

Bananas are rich in heart healthy fiber

Recent studies show that people who eat the most of these heart healthy fiber had 12% less coronary heart disease and 11% less cardiovascular disease.

Bananas are good source of Vitamin B6

Bananas contain 0.68 mg of Vitamin B6 or 34% of daily value. Vitamin B6 helps keep levels of cardiovascular disease risk factor, homocysteine, in balance.

Bananas contain phytosterols

Phytosterols may promote heart health through their ability to inhibit cholesterol absorption.

Bananas have antacid effects

Eating a lot of fresh bananas can protect the stomach against ulcers and ulcerative damage.

Bananas have high levels of potassium

The banana's potassium levels may help regulate blood pressure and reduce stroke risk. Bananas also offer quick relief for muscle cramps.

Gluten intolerance is not uncommon which is why gluten free diet is becoming more and more popular. Some people seek gluten free diet without even being allergic to gluten.

What is Gluten and what is gluten free diet?

Gluten is a particular protein found in foods such as:

wheat,

rye, and

barley.

Gluten free diet is a diet consisting only of gluten free foods. The list of gluten free foods will be posted later.

Why are gluten free diet important?

Many people are allergic to gluten but not everyone know about their every allergy. Some people are allergic to wheat and gluten without even knowing it. One out of 133 people have celiac disease, a genetic intolerance to gluten. Millions more people have a gluten sensitivity or intolerance that is not celiac disease but an intolerance to gluten that causes other allergic symptoms.

"If you are plagued by any of the disorders or discomforts ranging from lack of energy to dry skin or from falling hair to arthritis. . . then you will want to dash to read The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health at your first opportunity to learn all you can to improve your health."
(Linda Davis Kyle, The Midwest Book Review, Nov 2005 )

"I am happy to report that this book is certainly exhaustive in its approach and is, at the same time, very well-written and highly readable."
(Swamy Swarna, Swamy's Book Reviews )

Product Description

With more than 50,000 first-edition copies sold, this expanded second edition provides the latest information on restoring your body’s acid-alkaline balance

• Discusses the role of enzyme supplements, prebiotic and probiotic complexes, and antioxidants in neutralizing and eliminating acids

• Addresses the relationship of proper hydration to essential enzyme activity and acid elimination

• Outlines a sample alkaline detoxification diet

Most people consume an abundance of highly processed foods that acidify the body. As a result, they are afflicted with health problems ranging from minor skin irritations, chronic fatigue, back pain, and depression to arthritis, ulcers, and osteoporosis. To enjoy optimum health, the body needs balanced quantities of alkaline and acid substances. In The Acid-Alkaline Diet for Optimum Health, naturopath and detoxification expert Christopher Vasey shows how a simple change in diet to restore your acid-alkaline balance can result in vast improvements in health.

With two new chapters, this updated and expanded second edition provides the latest information on proper hydration and deacidification, important alkalizing supplements, and how to eliminate the body’s accumulated acids through intestinal cleansing. It also includes a new, detailed example of an alkaline detoxifying diet. Rather than organizing alkaline and acid foods based on their chemical composition, Vasey categorizes foods by their effect on the body, explaining that some foods, such as fruits, can have either an alkalizing or an acidifying effect, depending on who eats them. He describes how to determine your acid levels and how to design a diet best suited for your particular health needs.

Finally, the book can be used as a reference, by referring to those chapters relating to specific nutrition topics, life cycle groups, or health-related conditions, and referring to the last chapter and the appendic for helpful resources.

Hopefully, years from now, Eating Well for Optimum Health will be looked upon as the book that saved the health of millions of Americans and transformed the way we eat--not as the book we overlooked at our own peril.

Eating Well For Optimum Health: The Essential Guide to Bringing Health and Pleasure Back to Eating clarifies the mishmash of conflicting news, research, hype, and hearsay regarding diet, nutrition, and supplementation, and further establishes the judicious Dr. Weil, the director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, as a savior of public well-being.

If you've ever wondered what "partially hydrogenated soybean oil" really is, been perplexed by contrary news reports about recommended dosages for supplements, or questioned the safety of using aluminum pots for cooking, Dr. Weil will make it all clear.

Weil (pronounced "while") bravely criticizes many of the major diet books on the market, and backs up his admonitions with science. He warns readers to not fall under "the spell" of the anticarbohydrate Atkins Diet, but also criticizes the eating plan advocated by Dr. Dean Ornish--which has been granted Medicare coverage for cardiac patients--as being too low fat for the majority of people. (The omega-3 fatty acids missing from Ornish's diet are essential for hormone production and the control of inflammation, he says.)

It's also fascinating to learn that autism, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease may be caused by omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies, while an excess of omega-6 fatty acids--very common in the typical American diet--can exacerbate arthritis symptoms. Weil's explanation of the chemistry of fats will prove difficult for most readers, but few will want to eat fast-food French fries ever again after reading his appalling reasons for avoiding them, which go way beyond their well-documented heart-clogging capabilities.

After a thorough rundown of nutritional basics and a primer of micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals, Weil unveils what he feels is "the best diet in the world," with 85 recipes, such as Salmon Cakes and Oven-Fried Potatoes, that are healthy, tasty, quick to prepare, and complete with nutritional breakdowns. He includes a stirring chapter on safe weight loss (he sympathizes with the overweight and comically recalls his one-week trial of a safflower oil-diet while an undergraduate).

Other, equally enlightening sections include tips for eating out and shopping for food (with warnings on various additives and a guide to organics), and a wondrous appendix with dietary recommendations for dozens of health concerns, including allergies, asthma, cancer prevention, mood disorders, and pregnancy. Eating Well is an indispensable consumer reference and one not afraid to lambaste the diet industry and empower the public with information about which the majority of doctors--to the detriment of the public health--are ignorant. --Erica Jorgensen

From Publishers Weekly

Now considered one of holistic medicine's most authoritative voices, Weil (Spontaneous Healing; 8 Weeks to Optimum Health) provides a common-sense approach to healthy eating. While much of this information can be found in other volumes, Weil illuminates the often confusing and conflicting ideas circulating about good nutrition, addressing specific health issues and offering nutritional guidance to help heal and prevent major illnesses. Of particular value is his examination of recent fads, such as low-carbohydrate, vegan and "Asian" diets, with an eye toward debunking the myths about them while highlighting their valuable aspects. Readers will appreciate the brief stories of individuals who have made big changes in their eating habits and solved chronic health problems, as well as recipes for foods that Weil feels will satisfy nutritional needs and the taste buds. Although not the first to link the rise of cancer, heart disease and obesity with the now-prevalent consumption of fast food and processed foods that contain a lot of sugar and few, if any, micronutrients, Weil's articulate plea to reflect on the consequences is convincing. Despite Weil's emphasis on a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, unprocessed foods and much less meat and dairy products than most Americans are used to, readers will notice a profoundly realistic observation of what changes they can readily incorporate into their busy lives. And they will be heartened to learn that they can eat nutritious foods and still get much pleasure from them. (Mar.) - Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Cardiologist Agatston (The South Beach Diet) follows up his blockbuster book on weight-loss with this volume of more than 200 recipes, a number of which are culled from the kitchens of chefs in Miami Beach and other cities.

Each recipe is designated as Phase 1, 2 or 3 to help readers discern the segment of the diet for which they are appropriate. Carbohydrates are off-limits during Phase 1, but "good carbs" (like whole grains) are gradually reintroduced in Phase 2.

Phase 3 segues into a less restrictive but still healthy eating regimen.

Among the Phase 1 recipes are the simple Reuben Wrap (which calls for cabbage leaves instead of bread; the author notes readers "will have to have a 'rye' sense of humor for this"), as well as more complex main dishes such as Coconut Chicken and Sage and Rosemary Pork.

Phase 2 and 3 eaters will find delicious options such as Sesame Baked Chicken, Crab Royale and Couscous Salad. Noting that a variety of foods and recipes combats the repetition and boredom that are many dieters' downfall, Agatston presents a wide array of choices, with plenty of enticing fish and vegetarian dishes.

He also includes breakfasts, snacks and desserts, as well as ideas for home entertaining "South Beach-style" with a focus on fresh veggies, fat-free dips, shrimp and nuts for appetizers, and main dishes of grilled tuna or flank steak. Agatston leaves no stone unturned, even providing shopping lists and recipes for homemade condiments that forgo sugars.

There are many ways to eat healthy and look healthy and gorgeous. You do not have to starve or only eat vegetables and fruits either. It's quite possible to have your cake and eat it too, argues dietitian-nutritionist Blum in this bubbly, vivacious approach to living well the healthy way.

Avoiding dietary absolutes and encouraging readers to make gradual changes in their eating habits rather than drastic ones (which are often hard to keep up), Blum's sensible guide is sure to resonate with young women.

She makes compelling arguments for choosing organic foods-going so far as to list the top 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables-and extols the virtues of grass-fed meat and dairy. An informative chapter detailing alcohol's specific effects on women (including calorie counts for a long list of beers and cocktails) enable readers to make the most of their nights out without paying for it later.

Troubleshooting suggestions offer relief from the symptoms of everything from hangovers and herpes to smoking cessation and premenstrual discomfort. Rounded out with chapters on dietary supplements and depression, as well as a Q&A for frequently asked queries-"What kind of prepared foods (i.e., frozen dinners) are actually good for me?"-Blum's guidebook complete guide to women's health is an encouraging, smart and sisterly volume that deserves a place alongside other trusted go-to resources

Have you heard of the DASH diet? Do you know what it is? DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and it is promoted by the NIH, a United States government organization, to control hypertension. It is a diet plan that many follow and have benefited from. You can get a free copy of the DASH diet from the NIH.
DASH Diet is a post from: The Healthy Diet

What is the DASH diet?

The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a diet promoted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute which is a part of the NIH, a United States government organization, to control hypertension.

Typical DASH Diet

A major feature of the DASH diet plan is limiting intake of sodium.

It also generally encourages the consumption of:

nuts,

whole grains,

fish,

poultry,

fruits and

vegetables

while lowering the consumption of:

red meats,

sweets, and

sugar.

It is also "rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as protein and fiber.

What is the DASH diet based on?

The DASH diet is based on NIH studies that examined three dietary plans and their results. None of the plans were vegetarian, but the DASH plan incorporated more than the others studied:

fruits and vegetables,

low fat or nonfat dairy, beans, and nuts

Dash Diet Plan

Not only does the DASH diet plan emphasizes good eating habits, but also suggests healthy alternatives to "junk food" and discourages the consumption of processed foods. The DASH diet reduced systolic blood pressure by 6 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 3 mm Hg in patients with normal blood pressure. Those with hypertension dropped by 11 and 6, respectively. There are several eating plans included in the diet, with the daily caloric intake ranging from 1699 to 3100 dietary calories.

NIH DASH Diet Guidebook

The NIH has published a Dash diet plan guidebook, "Your Guide to Lowering your Blood Pressure With DASH", which details the nutrition facts of popular mainstream food items and their healthy alternatives. The manual also provides samples of meal plans and proportions along with their associated nutritional information. The last pages of the manual provides a list of resources and how to obtain them.

There are many ways to lose weight as well as stay healthy. Have you ever considered a low fat diet? Do you know if a low fat diet is the best for weight loss or if another type of diet is better? Find out what a low fat diet is and why people should stay off bad fat and have more good fat. Find out the USDA's definition of what a low fat diet is and whether it is a good match for your situation.
What Is a Low Fat Diet? is a post from: The Healthy Diet

Many people think that to lose weight, the less fat you consume, the faster you lose weight. While it is good to avoid excessive fat in your diet, a healthy diet needs to have some fat in it. It is important to know that dietary fat is needed for good health, as fats supply energy and essential fatty acids, in addition to supplying fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. It is also important to know the difference between bad fat which you need to avoid and good fat which helps you stay healthy.

Definition of a Low Fat Diet

According to the US Department of Agriculture or USDA, a low-fat diet, as the name implies, is a diet that consists of little fat, especially saturated fat and cholesterol, which is thought to lead to increased blood cholesterol levels and heart disease risk.

Health Benefits of a Low Fat Diet

In recent years, the exact health benefits of a low-fat diet have been debated. A 2006 study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association argued that a low-fat diet did not reduce the incidence of breast cancer. However, this study was criticized by several epidemiologists for its lack of validity (see "Criticisms" in the Women's Health Initiative article).

Is a Low Fat Diet the Best for Weight Loss?

A 2002 Cochrane Review found low-fat diets to be no more effective than other weight loss diets in achieving lasting weight loss.

From a very young age, we learn that healthy diet composes of a variety of food groups. You have to get your daily protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, vitamins as well as fat. The US Department of Agriculture has come up with the healthy diet food pyramid to help you determine what a healthy diet is. There are recommended servings of fruits and vegetables that you should have each day.

Impressively modern in design, The No-Grain Diet brings a realistic viewpoint to the problems of weight loss in a genuine effort to improve the health of an ever-growing number of obese Americans. Offering a variety of "food plans," along with a set of techniques aimed at controlling emotional eating and cravings for "bad" foods, Dr. Joseph Mercola clearly understands how to motivate us--in one section, he suggests that rather than "living by the scale," we measure our success in relation to the fit of our favorite pair of slightly-too-snug jeans.

Many recipes are included, most of which are free of the boring flavor substitutes so common in diet books. The diet itself combines several familiar concepts. The "no grain" model emphasizes organic vegetables and quality protein, with limited fruits and absolutely no simple carbs. Mercola's idea of "quality protein" is somewhat startling--he is deeply concerned about toxins, and urges grass-fed beef over potentially mercury-filled fish. His main point is frequently reinforced: refined grains of any type are basically deadly and eating them should be viewed as an unhealthy addiction.

Here, the book veers off in a new direction: rather than gently nudging our habits in a new direction, he suggests we break what he insists is an addictive cycle with a method called "EFT," or "Emotional Freedom Technique." As a way to avoid surrendering to desires, his system of tapping acupressure points and repeating affirmations is used to overcome them. While repeat dieters will understand the necessity of examining emotional ties to food, Mercola's voice becomes a tad strident, and possibly downright offensive to those with a different opinion on what constitutes an addiction. --Jill Lightner

From Publishers Weekly

"Don't be surprised if you never again want to eat starches, sweets, and grains!" Osteopathic physician Mercola stands on the shoulders of Atkins (and gives a nod to Gary Taubes, author of the New York Times Magazine cover article many believe blew the lid off high-carb, low-fat diets forever) to make big claims in this guide for overweight readers. Mercola's diet, which he's honed for over a decade at his Illinois wellness center, offers "near miraculous results," and will allow its followers to "permanently conquer food cravings," he says. The secret to lasting weight loss, according to Mercola, is to cut out starches, sweets and grains entirely. (Dieters on the maintenance program are allowed "healthy" grains-buckwheat, quinoa, etc.) But though Mercola offers three different eating plans (The Booster, The Core and The Advanced Food plan) and plenty of no-grain recipes, his program goes beyond mere dieting: Mercola is a proponent of the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a kind of "psychological acupressure" that he says is "the equivalent of AA for grain addiction." Developed by Gary Craig, EFT involves tapping on pressure points in the face and upper body while repeating a healing, key phrase, such as "Even though I want to have pizza, I deeply and completely accept myself." Mercola's course for weight loss is an intensive one, with rigorous rules and plenty of additional components-lifestyle changes, supplements and self-affirmations-that take a lot more energy than calorie counting. But that's the whole point, Mercola says, because cutting back on calories or carbs alone leads to temporary weight loss at best. For those willing to dedicate themselves to such a program, Mercola's guide may offer real results, and the case studies he includes should certainly help with motivation.

Read on to find out if you can buy frozen fruit and if they are almost as good as fresh fruit. It will really help your lifestyle.
Is Fresh Fruit Better Than Frozen Fruit? is a post from: The Healthy Diet

The question of whether a fresh fruit is better than frozen fruit has been on people's mind at one time or another. With many food, fruits and vegetables, it can be impractical to buy them fresh. Busy people have grown accustomed to eating frozen food, fruits and vegetables. Some even take them in the form of power or pills. So, let's examine if fresh fruit is better than frozen fruit.

Is Fresh Fruit Better than Frozen Fruit?

Fresh does not necessarily mean quality

In contrary to what one might think, fresh fruit is not always better than frozen fruit. This is because a fresh fruit may be of bad quality whereas frozen fruit can be of better quality. While it is usually true that fresh fruit is better than frozen fruit, you have to take the quality factor into account.

What does freezing do to nutrients?

Freezing usually decrease the overall nutrient content of food. How much nutrients are destroyed depends on the food.

When is frozen fruit better than fresh fruit?

Consider fruit that not grown in its season or when the organically grown products are not available. In this case, frozen organic fruits are good substitutes. When fruit are grown out of season, artificial fertilizers and pesticides are often used. In this case, no matter how fresh these fruits are, they are still not as good as frozen fruits of the fruits grown in its season full of the natural nutrients. The small percentage of the nutrients that they lost from being frozen is small when compared to the hardly any nutrients found in fresh fruits grown out of season sprayed with artificial fertilizers or pesticides.

Most people know that they should be eating healthy but do you know what the real definition of a healthy diet is? If you have been reading up on how to eat healthy, you will have come across many diet plans that will show you what to eat and what not to eat. Now, which plan are you going to follow? Find out what it means to be on a healthy diet here so that you can choose what to eat that is best for your situation.
What Is a Healthy Diet? is a post from: The Healthy Diet

"What is a Healthy Diet" is a loaded question. In the past, it would have been difficult to answer this question but nowadays there are enough science, evidence, studies and researches behind explanations of what a healthy diet is.

Definition of healthy diet

If you have been reading a lot of resources online, you will see that most people have the definition of what a healthy diet is as a diet low in fat and consisting of lots of fruits, vegetables and fibers as well as other added nutrients. However the most basic definition of a healthy diet is the diet that after you eat, you feel well. In another word, a healthy diet is the diet that makes you:

not having to go to the doctors or hospitals

immune to diseases and illnesses

never get sick

feel energized

feel younger

look younger (better skin, complexion, etc)

live longer

and so on... (you get the idea)

Healthy Diet and Weight Loss or Gain

With this definition in mind, however, a healthy diet does not stop there, a healthy diet will also make you feel lively and happy as well as lose weight. Each person has a norm or ideal weight that, if you are at that weight, then you are just right, not too fat or too thin. A healthy diet will help you achieve your ideal weight.

Short Term or Long Term Goal

Most people think by eating healthy, they are depriving themselves of all the great food in the world. Many people say, if you don't eat what you want then life is not worth living. Well, on the one hand, by eating unhealthy food, you will get the joy while eating the food, but you will spend the rest of your life paying for that joy. Most people are not realizing that the small burst of joy of eating that hamburger is not worth spending the last 20 years of their life in the hospital bed or eating only low cholesterol foods and having to take pills and injections just to keep the body function like a normal person.

So, if you want to live longer and enjoy life even when you are 80 - 90 or 100 years old, then you will need to start eating healthy now. Don't destroy your body and health and fix them when they are already destroyed. You have no doubt heard that prevention is better than correction. Eat healthy now and start living a healthy lifestyle so that you can enjoy life fuller. A healthy diet is not hard to come by and they are not expensive either. All you need to be on a healthy diet is a will to become healthy and a commitment to stay healthy.

If you need help and suggestions, here is a book that can help you eat healthy!
